Alberta Environmental Farm Plan

The Alberta Environmental Farm Plan (AEFP) Company is a non-profit company that helps farmers and ranchers identify environmental opportunities and challenges on their own land. The AEFP Company was created in April 2002 because Alberta producers identified the need for delivery of an environmental farm plan program to be arm's-length from government.

The Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) process helps you identify and address environmental risks and opportunities in your operation. This plays a key part in safeguarding your local environment. And a healthy environment is essential to the success of Alberta's agricultural producers.

Maintaining water, soil and air quality and biodiversity contributes to:
  • sustainable production of crops and livestock,
  • a healthy and diverse landscape for your family and community, and
  • a beautiful, productive environment for the next generation.
Ensuring a healthy environment is also a crucial element in marketing our agricultural products. Consumers are becoming increasingly concerned about the safety and quality of the food they eat and about how that food is produced. Our reputation for producing good food in a healthy environment helps Alberta products compete in world markets.

Any producer wanting to operate over the long term will be managing risks such as market risks, production risks, and succession plans. Managing environmental risk is the next step in moving towards sustainability.

In developing an Environmental Farm Plan, producers will be:
  • Adopting best management practices that can help improve farm productivity, and contribute toward healthy and safe food products. Maintaining water, soil and habitat quality
  • Building acceptance of the operation among neighbours and the general public
  • Improving marketability of farm products
  • Sustaining the land's productivity for the next generation
  • Reducing agricultural inputs
  • Adding value to the farm property
Developing an Environmental Farm Plan is available to producers free of charge. All workshops, materials and coaching are provided at no cost to producers. Those participating in the workshops will also enjoy a full lunch at no charge.

The only costs associated with the EFP process are the producer's time to complete their EFP and the implementation of any management or production changes identified in the plan. For many of these improvements, producers may qualify for up to $50,000 per farm in cost-shared assistance available through the federal Canada-Alberta Farm Stewardship Program.
